York has a long and celebrated history – during his nearly two millennia as a large settlement has been known by a variety of different names by their rulers, many before become universally known as York.
There is evidence of settlement in the New York area that dates back almost 6,000 years. But it was the ninth Roman legion, under the governor control Cerealis Qunitus Petilius was credited as the formal establishment of the city of Eboracum at the confluence of the rivers Foss and Ouse in 43 AD.

During this period the Roman name Eboracum became Eoforwic, the name by which it was known until 866 AD when the Vikings under the joint leadership of Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan conquered the city. Ten years later the name of the city of Jorvik became the capital of the Viking kingdom of the same name.
In fact, the Viking influence is still strong in the modern day city of York, with the suffix "gate" from the cat ", which means road or highway, still in widespread use. Goodramgate, Micklegate, Stonegate century Coppergate and 21 are the main channels York who were appointed during the time of the Vikings control.
Stonegate was originally the road Roman stone that went directly through the heart of the city and remains one of the biggest attractions for modern day visitors from York, which offers some unique boutiques and is also home to one of the York original old hotels. Yet running, but only as a pub, Ye Olde Starre Inn dates back to the English Civil War, retaining many historic features and is said to be haunted by several ghosts, including rather odd a couple of cats!
William the Conqueror lost no time in reaching Jorvik after winning the Battle of Hastings However, the Jorvik Viking name has not been modified by the French, but later became corrupted during the Middle Ages, first into Yerk and finally, in York, in Tudor times.
Today, visitors marvel at York Minster, the cathedral was begun in the 12th century, but was not completed during 200 years, the narrow streets and rich history that lies within this walled medieval city, now known as firmly York plain old!
