i am travelling from london uk to new york , usa what is the best season to go, any cheap bed and breakfast of your knowledge or experience from past trips or any friendly website for travellers?. cheers
The best season to visit New York is spring/summer – I would say the most agreeable weather is between May and July. There can be some pretty serious heat waves in later July and August, but the rest of the summer is usually gorgeous here.
As for travel, you should go to www.travelzoo.com, www.orbitz.com, or any other travel search engine. If you’re a student, www.studentuniverse.com is great for student discounts.
As for staying in a hotel, if you’re looking for cheap, try to book in Queens or Brooklyn. Both are subway rides from Manhattan, and you’ll be paying a lot less. There’s a Howard Johnson in Woodside, Queens that a friend of mine works at and it’s pretty cheap – and it’s not a bad area at all. Look at cheaper hotel chains – Super 8 (there are a couple in Queens and Brooklyn and at least one in Manhattan), Howard Johnson, Best Western, etc. You can also check out www.hotels.com.
New York is NOT an expensive city if you know where and how to look. This is a ridiculous stereotype because many people assume that designer clothes and 5th Avenue represent the market values for everything. And, New Yorkers are actually quite friendly, they’re just constantly in a hurry – you wouldn’t be friendly if someone stopped you on your way to work to ask, in broken English, how to get to Coney Island, Brooklyn from 34th Street in Manhattan. Please don’t listen to some of the idiots who have posted previously – they’ve probably been to the city once, had a bad experience, and ignorantly based their entire view of New York on that. If you want to shop and not spend an arm and a leg on one designer bag, go to Queens Center (the main shopping mall in Queens) or Kings Plaza (the main shopping mall in Brooklyn) You’ll have a wonderful time if you take advantage of the free and cheaper things to do with your time (like the dozens of free parks, museums, and shows we have throughout the summer). And, if worse comes to worse, go to Brooklyn and mingle with us – we’re pretty awesome
