Mount Pleasant Area in Charleston, SC?

I am going to a conference held in downtown Charleston (historic district). I am unable to pay the exorbitant rates the downtown boutique hotels want. I am wondering if the Mount Pleasant/Patriots Point is a good alternative? Specifically, I was looking at Days Inn, Red Roof, and Extended Stay Mount Pleasant locations. Is there public transport to downtown? Is this better than North Charleston? Thank you.

Mt. Pleasant would be a good alternative. You may also want to look at some places on Savannah Highway in West Ashley which will put you just a few minutes from downtown. North Charleston is patchy–some areas are fine but others have a lot of crime–it is also a farther drive from downtown. I know the city has some public transportation but I never used it so I can’t say how good it is. Some hotels may have shuttle services to downtown as it is a big tourist spot but that may be more seasonal as winter is sort of the off-season.
