The history of California is also a very popular reason for the many visitors each year. Already in 1579 the explorers decent English and Spanish began to explore the beautiful coast of California and twenty-one missions were built along from the coast by Spanish priests in 1769. It was not until 1821, however, that California became part of Mexico and it was not until 1848 that the United States won California, in a war with Mexico, which is also the year that started the gold rush when the precious metal was discovered. Finally, in 1850 won statehood for California as the 31st state in America. Since then the state of California's population has increased steadily, as individuals from all walks of life flock to the coast to enjoy the nice weather, sunny days and beautiful scenery.
