Clare Island, off the west coast of Ireland, is a wonderful place to escape. The two days I spent there last spring were two more days glory of my trip.
The narrow road I hiked to the north shore of the island began in the 15th century castle was the stronghold of the famous pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O'Malley) and took me through fields of grazing sheep and the old Bronze Age cooking sites. The huge blue sky with white clouds was a perfect Rolling backdrop to one of the best days we've had in Ireland (or anywhere for that matter).
Since the lifting of the largest island, views of the coast west of Ireland and other islands of Clew Bay became more and more beautiful. I could not have imagined the dramatic cliffs ending in and went to see the sea below. The strong wind made standing near the shore a little scary as I had thoughts of what my mother's reaction would be. I even took some video to show when I came back safely!
On top of my adventure, hiking, had a light beautifully situated on the cliffs of the island. The lighthouse and the structure in the vicinity have been used as a bed and breakfast and was being restored as a private retreat. The owner, who were at the site, kindly allowed to have a look around, climb the staircase to the top of the lighthouse, and taking pictures from all points of view. This is my idea of heaven.
Clare Island is the largest island, and highest in Clew Bay. It has been inhabited for 5,000 years. When you visit, you can easily walk or bike to the remains of promontory forts, a megalithic tomb and the burial site of Grace O'Malley in the 13th century Cistercian abbey.
You can enjoy the beaches sand and clear water as the search for rare flowers, sea birds such as peregrine falcon and antiques. The peak of Knockmore is another destination that you can explore on the island. The beautiful waters surrounding the island is famous for its diving sites.
Clare Island is also known as a place for summer festivals and lively music traditional year round. I had a meal at the community center where the dinner is served at night. I was O'Grady's Guest House, a bed and breakfast impeccable family friendly property that runs the same Clare Island Ferry Company.
You can reach the island by ferry from Pier Roonagh outside Louisburgh. The pier is 35 minutes drive southwest of Westport, County Mayo, which is one of my favorite cities in Ireland. The 5 km (3 miles) ferry ride offers a unique view on the west coast of Ireland and Clare Island. The shuttles run every day, weather permitting.
If you have time, stop at the Grace O'Malley, museum in Louisburgh before his trip to the island. You will be amazed at the story of the life of the pirate queen. He had incredible adventures including its interactions with Queen Elizabeth. You have a unique experience when you visit Clare Island, Ireland. I wanted to stay longer and I will return someday soon.
