Does the MLB all star game need overhauling?
13 inning game? Players can’t re-enter? Winner gets the home advantage? Imagine an NBA all star going five hours.
1) get rid of the winning-league-get-world-series-home-field rule. That is not a fair way to determine home field.
2) no ASG should go more than, say, 12 innings…and if it’s a tie, so be it. After all, it’s an exhibition game!
3) stop with the every-team-gets-a-rep rule. That worked back when there were only 8 teams in each league, but with 15, you’re forced to watch “all-stars” like Cristian Guzman
4) I’d prefer to watch the “stars,” not the guys who are having the best 1st halves – basically players with an established track record of performance. I have no desire to see the likes of Carlos Quentin, Brian Wilson, Guzman, or Ryan Dempster – flashes in the pan – in an ASG
5) Change the voting system for starters. Fan voting is great, but balance it out so 33% is fan vote, 33% is player vote, and 33% is team vote. That way we aren’t stuck with an AL starting lineup of all Red Sox and Yankees, voted in only because of popularity. maybe that means fan votes also count, to some degree, for reserves.
6) Stop with the home run derby already. Please.
